NASA ESMD's Education Site
The NASA Exploration Systems Mission Directorate sponsors a higher education project. This project has various components, including senior design course content, faculty fellowships at NASA, a systems engineering paper competition, and and various student opportunities and resources. Air Force Center for Systems Engineering - Case Studies
Why Case Studies? - To facilitate learning by emphasizing the long-term consequences of the systems engineering/programmatic decisions on cost, schedule, and operational effectiveness of our DOD Systems and Weapon Systems. They will be used to enhance systems engineering curriculums at AFIT and other locations, and to provide lessons learned for our leaders and engineers. Visit: http://www.afit.edu/cse/cases.cfm
NASA Academy of Program/Project & Engineering Leadership (APPEL) - Case Studies
Case studies illustrate the kinds of decisions and dilemmas managers face every day, and as such provide an effective learning tool for project management. Due to the dynamic and complex environment of projects, a great deal of project management knowledge is tacit and hard to formalize. A case study captures the complex nature of a project and identifies key decision points, allowing the reader an inside look at the project from a practitioner's point of view.
INCOSE: International Council on Systems Engineering
The International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) aims to advance the state of the art and practice of systems engineering in industry, academia, and government by promoting interdisciplinary, scalable approaches to produce technologically-appropriate solutions that meet societal needs.
As a nonprofit, membership-based organization, INCOSE disseminates knowledge, facilitates international collaboration, promotes the establishment of competitive standards for systems engineering, and encourages governmental and industry support for research and educational programs that advance the field and practice of systems engineering. Visit: http://www.incose.org/
NASA Aeronautics and Space Database
The Aeronautics and Space Database provides access to research reports, articles, and books from NASA and other agencies on aeronautics, astronautics, chemistry and materials, engineering, geosciences, life sciences, mathematical and computer sciences, physics, social sciences and space sciences published from 1915 to the present. Full text is available for many NASA documents. Visit: http://www.sti.nasa.gov
NESC: NASA Engineering and Safety Center
The NASA Engineering and Safety Center (NESC) performs value-added independent testing, analysis, and assessments of NASA's high-risk projects to ensure safety and mission success. NESC engages proactively to help NASA avoid future problems and works to promote safety through engineering excellence.
NASA Engineering Network
NASA has created a knowledge network to promote learning and sharing among NASA's engineers. Through NASA Lessons Learned, Agency-wide search, expertise locator, and discipline-specific communities of practice portals, the NASA Engineering Network (NEN) connects engineers to NASA's vast engineering resources to help them solve problems and design solutions more effectively and efficiently. One of those resources includes a repository of information from this PI-Team Masters Forum, which will be available to all Forum participants and the broader community. NASA Lessons Learned provides the official, reviewed lessons learned from NASA programs and projects, and it drives NASA's training, best practices, policies, and procedures. NEN's engineering search provides engineers with an enterprise search engine that mines the knowledge from NASA Lessons Learned and a continually growing number of engineering systems of interest.
The Network's expertise locator allows users to find experts within NASA's family with specific knowledge, competencies, and experiences. The communities of practice page provides facilitated communities where engineers can interact with leaders, experts, and other practitioners and leverage the knowledge, processes, and best practices created and employed by other engineers. What I've Been Reading
Learn about new books from well-known knowledge-sharing author Laurence Prusak in his blog on Harvard Business Online. Mr. Prusak is editor-in-chief of APPEL's ASK Magazine, and he is a researcher and consultant. He was the founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Knowledge Management (IKM) and has had extensive experience in helping organizations work with their information and knowledge resources. He has also consulted with many U.S. and overseas government agencies and international organizations (NGO's) and currently co-directs "Working Knowledge," a knowledge research program at Babson College, where he is a Distinguished Scholar in Residence.
